As a nutrition expert, you are doing a fantastic job of teaching and motivating your clients to modify what, when and how much they’re eating to improve their health and well-being. Yet, many of your clients struggle to make and maintain these changes. This is the problem that I decided to tackle over a decade ago in my practice. I discovered that the solution is to help clients focus on WHY they eat the way they do. I had the great opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Colleen Cannon, a clinical psychologist with passionate and practical expertise in the application of the cognitive-behavioral framework for disordered eating. I learned that to help clients change their eating habits they needed to change their thinking habits. Wow! Talk about a shift in my approach with clients! And the clients loved it!
In 2008, Colleen and I developed a sequenced, evidence-directed, psychoeducational program for group workshops and individual client sessions. The first step in sustainable, healthy behavior change is AWARENESS. Using fun, ‘here’s what you do’ tools and activities, clients recognize the reasons and triggers that underlie their problematic eating habits. This discovery process is exciting! It takes the weight of shame and guilt off clients’ shoulders. It’s also essential for successful, positive, personalized, sustainable change.
Once clients understand why they eat the way they do, there’s a wide range of cognitive-behavioral strategies and skills that they can learn to better manage their eating.
I hope that you’ll enjoy using the downloadable eating self-awareness tool as much as I do. Try it yourself tomorrow! See what you discover about your eating habits.
