Teaching Peers About Eating Self-awareness

Posted: May 1, 2018

When asked to speak at her daughters’ school after care program, Cheryl Strachan, RD and owner of Sweetspot Nutrition, invited her older daughter Kayla to take the spotlight. Kayla wrote out a plan for her presentation and did a great job of introducing her fellow students to the concept of eating self-awareness (see Kayla’s presentation outline and photos below). Cheryl shared that the children quickly understood the concept of the three types of hunger and enjoyed the mindful eating activity.

Presentation Outline:

  • Read the book, ‘Is this stomach, mouth or heart hunger?®’
  • Ask, “Who has felt hungry today?”
  • When someone raises their hand, ask “Is it stomach, mouth or heart hunger?”
  • Eat two foods mindfully
